Divya Desams in Pandiyanadu
Pandiyanadu, the land of the ancient Pandya dynasty, is home to 18 magnificent Divya Desam temples spread across the southern districts of Tamil Nadu. This region encompasses Madurai, Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram, and Sivakasi, covering a vast area rich in Vaishnavite heritage. The temples here include the famous Kallazhagar Temple near Madurai and the Koodal Azhagar Temple in the heart of Madurai city.
Birthplace of Nammalvar
Pandiyanadu holds special significance as the birthplace of Nammalvar, the greatest among the 12 Alwar saints. The Sri Aadhinatha Swamy Temple at Alwar Thirunagari (Thirukkurugur) is his birthplace and one of the most revered pilgrimage sites for Vaishnavites. Nammalvar composed over 1,000 hymns that form the core of the Nalayira Divya Prabandham.
Planning Your Visit
Given the spread of 18 temples across southern Tamil Nadu, devotees should plan a 3-4 day pilgrimage. Start from Madurai (Koodal Azhagar and Kallazhagar temples), proceed south through Sivakasi and Tirunelveli, and end at the temples near Ramanathapuram. Madurai is well connected by air, rail and road from all major cities.
