Importance of Bhoomi Poojan

In Hinduism, different rituals are needed to be performed before starting the house construction. According to the Vaastu Shastra, five poojas or rituals must be performed before the construction begins. These are Bhoomi Pooja (means seeking the permission from land or bhoomi), Balidaana (means offering), Hala Karshana (means leveling of the site), Ankura Roopana (means sowing of the seed) and Shilaanyaasa (means laying the foundation).

Bhoomi pooja is the first and the most important ritual that needs to be performed before the commencement of construction work. It has to be done on a particular day and time as fixed by the astrologer. Morning time is mostly preferred for this. According to the Vaastu Shastra, in order to take the permission from mother land to build the house or office, bhoomi pooja is important. When the construction work takes place, you have to make many changes in the land and it disturbs the earth’s equilibrium. Therefore, you must take the permission and seek forgiveness from the earth.

Preparation for bhoomi poojan

For performing the bhoomi poojan, you have to do many preparations. First of all, you should clean the area on which pooja has to be done. Remove all the stones, dust, trashes in the land. You should also remove the thorny bushes. You should divide the land area where construction has to be done into 9 *9 grids. Mark the foundation of the building. After this, in north east portion of the marking, you have to dig a square hole. Place the cement in 4 quadrants of hole. Wash five stones thoroughly for consecration by priest. After this you have to ready the kalash, in which you have to keep nine gems (Navratans), a small gold piece, betel nut, turmeric stick, silver coin, coriander seeds, jaggery, sambarani, and small amount of green moong. After the preparations, you can start the bhoomi-pooja.

Performing pooja

You can start the bhoomi pooja by performing a short ceremony by the priest or by yourself to appreciate and honor the energy emerged from the land. After this the priest will start the actual rituals by offering prayer to the Vaastu Devta. Different communities have different methods for conducting bhoomi-pooja. After offering the prayer to Vaastu Devta, you have to purify the whole place by sprinkling pure gangajal using the flowers or mango leaves. While doing this you have to recite the mantras. After this, you have to place the stones and kalash as directed by the priest.

You can take the help of pundits and astrologers to find out the auspicious time and day for bhoomi-pooja. Pundits have all the knowledge of mantras and rituals that are part of the pooja. Therefore, instead of doing it by yourself, it is better if you let the priest or pundits do it. It makes a person feel satisfied regarding the land he is using for constructing house or office. This pooja is a part of worshiping. It is considered to be very good to perform this bhoomi poojan before starting the construction work.
